Want a Hot Public Speaking Tip? Implement!
When I meet with speakers, many ask for a hot public speaking tip. The fact is there are dozens of sites online today that offer more speaking tips than you could ever need.
The best one I can offer is not actually a public speaking tip in and of itself because if everyone who asked followed my advice, we’d have nothing but clones running everywhere all sounding the same. My favorite public speaking tip is to implement what ever advice they receive, from a source that they trust.
Lets look at that a bit closer.
The most important public speaking tip is to implement
To implement, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary means “to carry out or accomplish; especially : to give practical effect to and ensure of actual fulfillment by concrete measures.”
So what does that mean? Well as NIKE has reminded us so many times, “Just Do It!” When you hear something that is useful to you as a speaker, do it. When you learn something that then requires action to convert the lesson into results, do it!
Here’s a public speaking tip converted into action
In my current Unforgettable Speakers mentoring group, we were discussing the power of doing research to identify a niche market and then build a continuum of products to serve that audience, one of my students said this: “This has been an incredibly useful exercise and it has really made me think about what I can offer and what I would like to be doing with this project. I did a survey amongst my current list, and have had a positive response, with over 300 people interested.”
That is implementation – that is action. I write about the power of action regularly. But let me ask you, does anyone reading this post doubt that such action will lead to success? The funny thing is, I ask every student who is enrolling in my mentoring program, “What percentage of the ‘great-ideas’ you’ve received previously have been implemented? Why or why not?”
The question is answered in many different ways but all are essentially the same. Not many actually do get implemented. So, if you approach me and ask about a hot public speaking tip, expect me to tell you to implement the ideas you already have!

For me the answer is just one word; PROCRASTINATION! Usually, the hardest part is simply getting started! I notice that when I actually start writing, even though I don’t feel like it, I end up doing great work.
We always want our work to be good. This is why even if we don’t feel like working, once we do get started, we try to do our best and end up accomplishing something!
Case in point is chapter 5 of the novel I’m writing. I had been struggling with several ideas on how to tackle that particular chapter and couldn’t agree with myself on any idea. I didn’t feel like I even wanted to open the file yesterday. But when I did, and I tried to type the first sentence, I just couldn’t stop after that! I ended up with what I can consider my best work so far!
You only get to see the wall before you start working; but when you do start, you realize that “the wall” doesn’t exist!
Years ago, there was a record album cover that stirred some controversy. It was from the National Lampoon. It was a picture of a cute puppy with a gun to it’s head. The caption read, “Buy this album or we’ll shoot the dog”. Now I happen to love my dog, so please don’t send me hate mail, but I also loved this marketing ploy for it’s creative sense of urgency.
“So, what the hay does that have to do with Scott’s point on the power of action??” Good question.
Answer is: Everything.
Here’s a test: Write a terrific article about platform skills and alliteration by tomorrow morning, 7:00 a.m., or we’ll shoot the dog.
Wow!! Incentive provided (IF you like dogs).
Try the same test with different incentive:
Write a terrific article by 7am or we’ll feed your cat.
Huh?!? Okay, feed the cat.
DO IT is okay incentive, but incentive with positive or negative reward just can’t be beat!
DO IT and you’ll get a vacation in the Bahamas.
DO IT and event planners will fill your calendar.
DON’T DO IT and…well, good luck finding your kitty.
